When someone searches "electrician near me" on Google, they don't see your website first. They see the Map Pack — those three business listings at the top of the results with star ratings, phone numbers, and photos.
That Map Pack is built entirely from Google Business Profiles. If your GBP is weak, outdated, or missing information, you're losing clicks to competitors who just filled out their profile better than you did.
Here's everything you need to know to maximize yours.
Step 1: Complete Every Field
Google rewards completeness. The more information you provide, the higher the chance you appear in the Map Pack. Most businesses leave half these fields blank:
- Business name — exact legal name, no keyword stuffing (Google penalizes this)
- Primary category — be specific. "Electrician" beats "Contractor." "Home Inspector" beats "Professional Services."
- Secondary categories — add all relevant ones (e.g., "Commercial Electrician," "Residential Electrician")
- Service area — list every city you serve. Don't be shy — this is how Google knows where to show you.
- Hours — keep them current. Holiday hours matter too.
- Phone number — must match your website exactly
- Website — link to your actual homepage, not a landing page
- Description — 750 characters, plain English, mention your key services and service area naturally
Step 2: Photos — More Than You Think You Need
Businesses with photos get significantly more clicks than those without. For service area businesses, here's what to upload:
- Logo (square format)
- Cover photo (your best work, or a photo of you working)
- You and/or your team — real photos, not stock
- Before/after work examples (these perform incredibly well)
- Your truck or equipment with your branding
- Any certifications, licenses, or awards (photo of the actual document)
Aim for at least 10 photos. Add more over time. Google surfaces businesses that actively update their profiles.
Step 3: Reviews Are Your Ranking Factor
Reviews are one of the top factors in Map Pack rankings. Not just quantity — recency matters just as much. A business with 50 reviews from 3 years ago will often rank below a business with 20 reviews from the last 6 months.
How to get more reviews:
- Ask immediately after a job — while the customer is still happy
- Text them a direct link to your GBP review page (Google generates this for you)
- Add the link to your email signature and invoice
- Never offer incentives — Google can detect this and it violates their policy
Respond to every review. Good ones get a quick thank-you. Bad ones get a calm, professional response that shows you care. AI search engines specifically look at review response rate as a trust signal.
Step 4: Services List
Under your profile, you can add individual services with descriptions and prices. Most businesses skip this. Big mistake.
List every service you offer. Write a 2-3 sentence description for each one. Include pricing ranges if applicable. This data feeds directly into Google's understanding of what you do — and into AI search recommendations.
An electrician with 12 specific services listed (panel upgrades, EV charger installation, outdoor lighting, etc.) ranks better for all 12 service queries than an electrician with a blank services section.
Step 5: Posts — The Feature Nobody Uses
Google Posts let you publish updates, offers, and events directly to your GBP. They show up in your listing in search results and on Maps.
Most businesses never use them. That's free real estate you're leaving on the table. Post once a week: a recent job you completed, a seasonal offer, a tip for homeowners, a new service you've added. It takes 5 minutes and signals to Google that your profile is active.
GBP and AI Search
Your Google Business Profile is one of the primary sources AI search engines use when recommending local businesses. When ChatGPT or Google's AI Overview answers "best home inspector in Monterey," it's heavily weighted toward businesses with complete, well-maintained GBPs.
Everything above — complete info, photos, recent reviews, detailed services — directly improves your chances of being included in AI recommendations. Your GBP isn't just a Google Maps listing anymore. It's your AI search profile.
